Family & Partner Sponsorship Applications
One of the key objectives of Canada’s immigration policy is to promote family reunification. This policy enables permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their family members and, in some cases, relatives to immigrate to Canada. There are three primary types of partner sponsorship:
Spousal Sponsorship: This type allows you to sponsor someone you are legally married to, provided the marriage is recognized in the country where it occurred. The term “spouse” also includes same-sex marriages, which are legally recognized in Canada. A marriage certificate is required as proof.
Conjugal Sponsorship: In situations where couples cannot marry or live together due to circumstances beyond their control—such as immigration barriers or sexual orientation—Canada recognizes these individuals as conjugal partners. The relationship must have lasted for at least 12 months.
Common-Law Sponsorship: You can sponsor your partner if you have lived together for at least 12 consecutive months, even if you are not married.
